A Playful Fantasy
The Dokiwatch universe is designed to embody joy and fun, steering clear of serious themes. Joshi, a member of the development team, emphasized that the project aims to be a lighthearted exploration of a fantasy genre, stating, "It’s a fantasy within a fantasy." This approach allows for a unique narrative experience that diverges from the more serious tones typically found in Overwatch.
Character and Design Elements
At the heart of Dokiwatch is Juno, whose character is crafted to resonate with a younger audience. Lauren, another team member, highlighted the intention to create a universe that feels inclusive and appealing, particularly to female players. The design team drew inspiration from beloved anime series while ensuring that the Overwatch identity remained intact. They integrated elements of the mahō shōjo genre, characterized by magical girls, with the high-tech aesthetic that Overwatch is known for.
Narrative Freedom
Dokiwatch also provides an opportunity for the team to explore alternate universe scenarios, allowing for creative storytelling that diverges from the established Overwatch canon. Joshi noted that this freedom enables them to experiment with character interactions that would not typically occur in the main storyline. For instance, the comic features Juno's unexpected alliance with characters like Freja and Widowmaker, showcasing a playful twist on character dynamics.
