Vendetta, the latest addition to the Overwatch roster, has officially made her debut as Hero 45. Known as the She-Wolf of Retribution, she embodies a fierce gladiator spirit, ready to reclaim her birthright with a massive sword and a vengeance-driven narrative. Her introduction was marked by an action-packed trailer that showcased her agility and combat prowess, setting the stage for her upcoming Hero Trial on November 26.
The Development Journey
The creation of Vendetta involved how her character's motivations and design. Initially, the narrative team considered portraying her as a hero defending her homeland during Ramattra's Null Sector attacks. However, they ultimately opted for a more villainous angle, which senior narrative designer Jude Stacey described as 'way cooler.' This decision allowed the team to explore a character that is unapologetically driven by vengeance, filling a gap for a true villain in the Overwatch universe.
A Gladiator's Design
From a design perspective, Vendetta's character was influenced by various archetypes, including crusaders and gladiators. The development team experimented with three different prototypes, each exploring different combat styles: long-range hitscan, mid-range assassin, and close-range melee DPS. Ultimately, the melee build won out, allowing the team to create a hero who wields an impressively large sword, a feature they had long desired to implement.
Expanding Overwatch Lore
Vendetta's story is intricately tied to the Overwatch universe, being the daughter of former Talon member Antonio Bartalotti, who was killed by Gabriel Reyes. Her character not only adds depth to the game's narrative but also fulfills a long-standing request for a hero with Italian roots. The Colosseo map, which features prominently in Overwatch 2, serves as a cultural backdrop for her story, highlighting the significance of the arena in Italian heritage and Vendetta's role within it.
