What is Wave Respawn?

Wave Respawn is a new feature introduced in Season 12 of Overwatch's Competitive Play, replacing the previous Group Respawn system. This change is designed to improve team dynamics and reduce the frequency of one-sided matches, which have been a concern for players and developers alike.

Key Changes in Respawn Mechanics

Under the Wave Respawn system, when the first hero on a team dies, they initiate a new Wave for their team. Any hero that dies within six seconds of this initial death will respawn at the same time as the hero who started the Wave. This means that respawn times can vary, allowing for more synchronized team respawns. If a hero starts a Wave and no other hero has joined it when their respawn time reaches six seconds remaining, their respawn time is reduced by two seconds, bringing it back to the previous default of 10 seconds.

Impact on Gameplay

While the default respawn time has increased from 10 to 12 seconds, developers expect that average respawn times will decrease due to the new mechanics. Wave Respawn is also disabled during Overtime and when the Payload is near the end of the track in Escort and Hybrid modes. These changes are anticipated to lead to more frequent team fights and a reduction in the occurrence of one-sided matches, particularly benefiting higher-ranked players.
