A Shift in Narrative Direction
Vendetta's character development in Overwatch has taken a decisive turn, moving from a potential hero to a villainous figure. Initially conceptualized as a gladiator who defended Italian citizens during Ramattra’s Null Sector attacks, the narrative team ultimately chose to portray her as a character driven by darker motivations. Senior narrative designer Jude Stacey emphasized that the decision to make Vendetta a true villain was not only a creative choice but also a response to the need for more compelling antagonists in the game.
Design and Gameplay Considerations
The design process for Vendetta involved a three-tiered approach, focusing on narrative, gameplay mechanics, and visual concepts. The team explored various archetypes, including crusaders and gladiators, to create a sturdy hero with a striking silhouette. Senior game producer Kenny Hudson noted that the melee build for Vendetta emerged as the most compelling option, allowing the team to fulfill their desire to create a character wielding a massive sword.
Prototyping Vendetta
During the development phase, three distinct prototypes were created for Vendetta: a long-range hitscan, a mid-range assassin, and a close-range melee DPS hero. The melee prototype not only stood out in terms of gameplay potential but also aligned with the team’s vision of introducing a character that could deliver powerful melee attacks. This focus on a big sword and melee combat reflects a broader trend in Overwatch’s character design, aiming to diversify gameplay experiences.
