How Jetpack Cat Went From Decade-Old Idea to Playable Support

The concept predates Overwatch itself

Jetpack Cat can be traced to ideas developed around Titan, the cancelled project that preceded Overwatch. When Team 4 planned Season 1's five-hero launch, the long-running community concept became the roster's deliberately lighter counterweight to a darker Talon story.

Concept artist Bobby Kim's design paired Fika with rounded Overwatch technology and a cockpit built around cat-toy controls. Her model received flexible shoulders and widened eyes so a real cat's anatomy could still read clearly while operating the machine.

Permanent flight changed the production problem

Keeping Fika airborne avoided the difficult task of building a complete quadruped walk cycle with machinery attached, but it created a new fairness problem. Her silhouette, speed, hit area, ability ranges, and attachment points all had to work against the full hero roster.

Lifeline grew from an older two-seat vehicle idea and required different pull behavior for targets of different sizes. Purr turned the physical sensation of a cat's purr into close-range healing, while several abilities borrowed from the habit of knocking objects over.

Range limits keep the flying support near her team

Fika's healing works around her position and her primary fire loses effectiveness at range. Lifeline also restricts much of her normal damage and healing while active. Those constraints discourage a permanently airborne hero from spending an entire match outside meaningful counterplay.

One discarded Ultimate slowed incoming projectiles, but simultaneous casts also slowed the game server. The released kit came from repeatedly narrowing those ambitious ideas until the hero could remain unusual without behaving like a separate ruleset.
