Balance was not the assignment

Underwatch was announced as the annual rules-off event, with hero abilities, interactions, and physics intentionally pushed outside the competitive rulebook. The point was to discover what each hero could suddenly do, not to solve a stable ranked metagame.

That distinction gives the mode permission to be surprising. A familiar animation or cooldown can lead somewhere unexpected, and the fastest way to understand the event is to enter a match rather than read a complete change list first.

A longer window gives experiments room

The event ran from April 1 through April 13, long enough for players to move past the first round of jokes and find useful combinations inside the altered systems. Event rewards provided a reason to revisit the mode after the novelty match.

Underwatch also served as a tonal break in the Reign of Talon season. While the main story focused on faction conflict, the limited mode let the roster ignore continuity and competitive restraint for two weeks.
