Flex Queue allows one damage player to become a tank

The first Quick Play Hacked test runs July 16 through July 19. Flex Queue starts from a 1-3-2 structure: one Tank, three Flex Damage players, and two Supports. One of the three Damage players can switch to Tank at a time, producing either a 1-3-2 or 2-2-2 team during the match.

Blizzard's goal is to test a 6v6 structure that does not always require the matchmaker to find two dedicated Tank players per team. The tradeoff is social pressure, because a Damage player may feel pushed to take the second Tank slot.

Dynamic Queue lets the matchmaker choose the format

Dynamic Queue follows from July 30 through August 2. It aims for standard 2-2-2 matches, then shifts to the Flex Queue structure when the available Tank population would otherwise hold up the queue.

That approach could preserve more 2-2-2 games without accepting the full queue-time cost. It also means players may enter different team structures from one match to the next, which Blizzard identifies as the experiment's clearest consistency problem.

Blizzard publishes a snapshot of mode participation

As of June 28, Blizzard says roughly 54% of daily players used unranked 5v5 Role Queue and about 37% used ranked 5v5 Role Queue. Unranked 6v6 Open Queue reached about 19%, while ranked 6v6 Open Queue reached about 8%. Players can count in more than one mode, so those figures are not parts of a single 100% total.

Stadium ranked and unranked each sat near 3% of daily players. Blizzard says Stadium will continue receiving seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards, but the team is not planning new Stadium heroes or maps.

  • Unranked Role Queue 5v5: about 54% of daily players.
  • Ranked Role Queue 5v5: about 37%.
  • Unranked Open Queue 6v6: about 19%.
  • Ranked Open Queue 6v6: about 8%.

These are tests, not a format announcement

Game director Aaron Keller explicitly frames both weekends as experiments. A successful test would not automatically replace Overwatch's main format; the results could instead influence existing modes or future Arcade ideas.
