What Are Gadgets?
Gadgets are a new gameplay feature introduced in Overwatch's Season 19, designed to enhance player strategy in matches. Similar to active items in other multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games, Gadgets are buyable spells, buffs, or abilities that players can use at critical moments during gameplay. They provide additional tactical options to influence the outcome of battles, especially in the early rounds of a match.
Gadget Mechanics and Usage
Players can equip one Gadget at a time, but they have the flexibility to swap Gadgets between rounds, akin to the existing item system. Each Gadget is assigned an editable hotkey for streamlined access during gameplay. This allows players to strategically choose when to deploy their Gadgets, whether to secure a victory or to escape a challenging situation.
Variety and Balance of Gadgets
Season 19 launched with fourteen different Gadgets, each available at various price points to cater to different strategic needs. Many of these Gadgets are inspired by existing Hero abilities but are designed to be less impactful to maintain balance within the game. For instance, the Kitsune Charm, inspired by Kiriko’s Protection Suzu, offers a limited cleanse effect for the user rather than a broader area effect, ensuring that Gadgets complement rather than overshadow Hero roles.
- Common Gadgets are easily accessible and enhance early-game performance.
- Major Gadgets require more investment but can significantly alter the course of a match.
