What Are Gadgets?

Gadgets are a new category of active items introduced in Overwatch's Season 19, aimed at enhancing gameplay strategy. Players can equip one Gadget at a time, which can be swapped between rounds. These items are designed to provide players with additional tools to influence the outcome of battles, especially in the early stages of a match before accumulating Stadium Cash.

Development Process

The development of Gadgets was a multi-step process that involved extensive trial and error. Initially, the team experimented with making all Gadgets freely available, but this led to player frustration as it felt mandatory and complicated the gameplay. After several iterations, the final design required players to invest in Gadgets, allowing for a more strategic approach to their use.

Types and Functionality

There are fourteen Gadgets available, each with varying costs and effects. Some Gadgets mimic existing Hero abilities but are balanced to ensure they do not overshadow the Heroes themselves. For example, the Kitsune Charm Gadget offers a limited cleanse effect compared to Kiriko’s full ability. This design choice allows players to enhance their gameplay without compromising the unique roles of Heroes.
