A launch patch with changes beyond the new hero

Blizzard's October 6 retail update begins Season 5 with changes across regular matches, Competitive and Stadium. Sombra moves to Support, Roadhog gains a projectile-absorbing tool, and past Battle Passes become available alongside the current track. These are live-patch details, distinct from the broad promises shown at BlizzCon.

The update also changes hero hit volumes and reduces the global sizes of both hitscan projectile categories. That combination matters: a larger target region on a particular hero does not mean every weapon received an equivalent accuracy buff. Testing the changes together is more informative than comparing one isolated number.

Competitive and everyday match flow

Top 500 leaderboard ordering and end-of-season titles now emphasize Rank rather than Challenger Score, while the score still gates entry to the leaderboard. The patch also adds player-defined restricted words for chat and adjusts map voting. Grímsvötn joins Escort, and the Halloween event adds a separate limited-time mode.

Start by checking the section that affects your queue. Stadium's experimental Quick Play format is not a blanket replacement for Competitive role rules, and the event's powers are not a new standard ability kit for every match. The official live notes are linked below because launch values can receive subsequent corrections or hotfixes. Our separate hero and mode reports explain the largest changes without reproducing the entire balance table.
