Overwatch developers discuss shorter rounds, upgrades and hitbox work
A BlizzCon interview outlines Season 5 experiments without announcing a permanent replacement for normal matches.
Experiments rather than a settled new ruleset
In Inven Global's September 13 interview, Overwatch leadership described gameplay experiments involving shorter rounds and upgrades during a match, with player feedback guiding what comes next. The discussion points toward Season 5 testing; it does not establish a final permanent format for every competitive queue.
The developers also discussed reviewing hero hitboxes, including Jetpack Cat, Kiriko and Sojourn. No complete numerical adjustment table accompanies the interview. A design direction is not enough to calculate a new headshot breakpoint or declare that a particular projectile will connect in every previously missed situation.
Two different problems to evaluate
Shorter rounds and in-match upgrades concern pacing and decision-making. Hitbox changes concern whether visible characters and successful hits feel consistent. Combining them into one vague claim that the game is being simplified would miss the different questions each experiment is trying to answer.
The interview frames these ideas as experiments rather than settled replacements for the game's standard rules. A shorter round changes how quickly players reach a decisive fight; upgrades add choices during a match; hitbox work concerns how reliably the visible character matches the target being hit. Each needs its own feedback. Published test instructions and live patch values will establish the exact rules players can try, while the interview explains the design questions behind them.
